I started using Ubuntu (or Linux in general/I chose Ubuntu because a liked it best) some time ago on a more regular basis and will start writing about common (beginner-) problems and the solutions I’ve found or even problems I haven’t found a solution yet - whatever. Wanted to do this for some time now, but never did. Here it goes.
One of the first things that stink, is the problem of missing plugins. Like MP3, or Flash or… Newbies should consider to use EasyUbuntu, anyone can install necessary plugins with this - ANYONE. I also recommend using the 32 bit edition of Ubuntu, because it’s easier, especially for beginners, you run into so many problems at the start, that it doesn’t make any sense to add even more to the list. 64 bit forces you to compile almost everything yourself (=more work) and it has no benefits (only 32 bit packages are available almost everywhere pre-compiled), besides that it seems to be much cooler.
After using EasyUbuntu your installation can play MP3, show Flash in the browser, play DVDs… And it takes less than 5 minutes to achieve this. Components are selected through simple clicks.
